York presents a particular problem for a certain kind of traveller, which is that there is considerably more worth seeing here than a sensible person allows time for. There is a Roman fortress underneath it, a Viking city built on top of that, a Gothic cathedral that took two hundred and fifty years to complete, intact medieval walls you can walk for free, and a railway museum that is genuinely one of the great museums in Britain. It is also the size of a moderately confident market town. I gave it five days. It earned them.
